I’ve been pretty lucky in my travel days, exploring our countries great drives, But having just spent time in East Arnhem Land, I reckon this has to be classed as one of Australia’s most iconic drives. The Central Arnhem Road takes you on a journey through 60,000 years of history in East Arnhem Land’s vast untouched wilderness.

At the southern end there’s the majestic and stunning amphitheatre of Wilpena Pound and to the north there’s the drier and more isolated areas of Arkaroola as you head past the Gammon Ranges. The largest mountain ranges in South Australia have a complex series of properties that make up the Flinders, that are almost 430km long and has the second highest mountain in the state.

Pannawonica Hill is a popular spot for locals and it's claimed that the town's name came from here. The word ‘Pannawonica’ means the hill that came from the sea. Local legend says that two tribes were arguing for the rights to the hill when it was beside the ocean, but the sea spirit saw this and dragged the hill where it is today. The path that it was dragged on became the Robe River.

The landscape dates back an incredible 4.5 billion years making it one of the oldest on earth, where unique and ancient formations have created massive geological displays across the Murchison region. Combine this with meteorite strikes, thousands of years of human history with more than 20 culturally significant sites I just had to head to the area.
