When I was planning this trip I knew I’d have to fuel up along the way, and my target was the Aboriginal community of Ampilatwatja, nearly 500km from Camooweal. My 80 series is constantly off-road in some of the harshest conditions that our country can dish up. Quite often I’ll be away in dirty and dusty conditions for weeks at on end. But I find with the right products my 34-year-old Landcruiser 80 comes up a treat time and time again. Now while I’m happy to use self-serve car washes for soak and pre-wash while I’m on the road, I totally refuse to use those scratchy brushes they offer to avoid any more paint damage.

Wyperfeld is the third largest NP in Victoria broken up into three different management areas to protect its fragile Mallee country, indigenous heritage and European history. Covering a staggering 357,000 hectares it was first reserved in 1909 but declared in 1921 to protect and manage. My journey was along the inland route that started at Nanutarra Roadhouse off the NW coastal highway and headed 350km east towards Tom Price. It’s a beautiful drive across to the huge mining area of Tom Price with spinifex-covered hills and weathered-down mesa plateaus. My end goal was still another 30km to the east of Beltana into the remote and isolated Warraweena Station. The station is located where the Flinders and Gammon ranges meet and makes for a stunning drive across barren landscapes and through gorge country. The drive eastward towards Warraweena has long stretches of road passing between ancient rock formations on either side, crossing over rough dry creek beds until you enter the station's boundary.

Just past the fence is the site of the Beecroft Mine where on my last visit you could walk across the steel bridge and look down the shaft. Today it's all fenced off as the shaft erosion at the top is more dangerous than before. There’s an old rock wall here that was part of a shanty hut with a fireplace, as being nearly 1000m above sea level, the winters here are bloody freezing.

At the southern end there’s the majestic and stunning amphitheatre of Wilpena Pound and to the north there’s the drier and more isolated areas of Arkaroola as you head past the Gammon Ranges. The largest mountain ranges in South Australia have a complex series of properties that make up the Flinders, that are almost 430km long and has the second highest mountain in the state.

Pannawonica Hill is a popular spot for locals and it's claimed that the town's name came from here. The word ‘Pannawonica’ means the hill that came from the sea. Local legend says that two tribes were arguing for the rights to the hill when it was beside the ocean, but the sea spirit saw this and dragged the hill where it is today. The path that it was dragged on became the Robe River.
